AbdulMaalik Tailor, a Muslim convert for over 20 years is London’s first professionally qualified Muslim Tour Guide. A Londoner from birth, he specialises in Muslim heritage in Britain. He is the founder of Muslim History Tours, specialising in Halal Domestic and UK Inbound travel. He organises a range of inspiring Muslim history walks within and out of London distinctively wearing his Fez hat. He is also involved in research and delivers talks relating to local and national Muslim heritage of Britain. He also works with the media to promote Muslim history in Britain as well as with local authorities.

AbdulMaalik also works with Schools, youth groups and other educational and community organisations to further community cohesion within the city, bringing together different communities. As part of Muslim History Tours, he acts as an inbound tour operator as well, welcoming tourists from afar to London, organising for them Muslim friendly and Halal hotels, cruises and other tours. In recognition of this, Muslim History Tours came runners up for World’s Best Halal Tour Operator in 2015 (losing out to Etihad!).

Kawther Abbas is a GP by profession, and also studies Hawza part time at Al-Mahdi Institute. She has been teaching Quran and doing Islamic talks for around 20 years and is the co-founder of the Muslim Families initiative which runs programs targeted at children and their families.

Speaker

Nebil Husayn is a specialist in the field of Islamic studies. His research explores authoritarianism in the Middle East, debates on the caliphate, and the development of Islamic thought. Husayn also serves as a Senior Research Advisor for Mipsterz, an arts and culture collective curating, enabling, and amplifying artists of marginalized backgrounds through illustration, film, and music. He is the recipient of a Fulbright award and the University of Miami Fellowship in the Arts and Humanities. Husayn obtained his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University and an M.A. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Harvard University. He is the author of Opposing the Imam (Cambridge University Press, 2021), which examines the history of early Muslims who were hostile to Islam’s fourth caliph, Ali, and his descendants.

Husayn enjoys teaching a variety of courses and topics. They include the legacy of Malcolm X and the Black Panthers of New York (AAS 390/REL 372), early Islamic history (REL 271), gender (GSS 350/REL 371), Muslim spirituality and geopolitics (REL 370), atheism, and faith-based claims that invite skepticism (REL 102 and REL 104).

Speaker

A prolific writer, thinker, and commentator on Muslim Global Affairs with a 28-year experience of studying and analysing Islamic and Jihad movements. During this period, he has written numerous articles, opinion pieces, and been a regular commentator in Muslim and mainstream media. He has acted as a geopolitical analyst and expert for lawyers on international terrorism and extremism trials in a dozen cases.

He has been the Director of Centre for Muslim Affairs since 1997. Prior to this he was the Deputy Leader of the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain (1992-1997) and was responsible for much of its research and project development/management. The Parliament’s last project before it ended in 1997 was a global conference, “Islamophobia the oldest hatred”.

In his professional capacity, he has been a lecturer in social policy and public administration at De Montfort University Leicester (at the young age of 23). He has worked as a senior manager in and around local and national government for 25 years, in the field of community regeneration, where he has been responsible for hundreds of community based and business development projects. He has extensive experience of understanding diverse and multicultural communities.

He now runs his own consultancy business where he is a specialist in organisational and charity management, and has advised hundreds of charities, organisations, as well as lawyers. He is the author of Race Relations and Muslims in Britain (1993), The Home Office Strategy for Islam and Muslims in Britain (1996) , The Final Crusade against Islam: 911 and the Implications for Muslims (2002). Preventing Extremism or reforming Islam (2007), The Prevent Strategy; A Cradle to Grave Police State (2013).

Hujjat al-Islam Dr. Mohammad Ali Shomali is a graduate of the Islamic Seminaries of Qum, Iran. After completing his BA and MA degrees in western philosophy at the University of Tehran, he earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Manchester. He is currently the founding director of the International Institute for Islamic Studies in Qum. He is also the founding director of the Risalat International Institute, which is devoted to Islamic curriculum development and educational training, among other initiatives. He has led numerous Islamic educational courses and seminars in over 30 cities across four continents. Dr Shomali is the editor-in-chief of two journals: Message of Thaqalayn: A Quarterly Journal of Islamic Studies and Spiritual Quest: A Biannual Journal of Ethics and Spirituality. His interest and participation in interfaith dialogue over the past 20 years led him to share panels with key figures in the US, Canada, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Sweden, France, Poland, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and the Philippines.

Join us as we welcome Shaykh Arif Abdulhusein as he delivers a talk entitled “Delving deeper into the Qur’an”

SPEAKERS

Shaykh Arif Abdulhussain founded the Al-Mahdi Institute in 1993, and currently serves as its Director and Senior Lecturer in Usul al-Fiqh and Muslim Philosophy. For over twenty years, Shaykh Arif has been at the forefront of developing and delivering advanced Islamic studies, tailored toward training students capable of addressing the needs of contemporary societies. During this time he has continuously been committed to sharing the human face of Islam at various levels of society through a combination of inspirational and thought provoking public lectures together with a long-term commitment to intra and inter faith dialogue. He also continues his dedication in encouraging the development of indigenous expressions of Islam throughout the world which contribute to the pursuit of human development in its fullest sense. Shaykh Arif was educated at the Madrassah Syed al-Khoei, London from 1985 and graduated with Honours in 1988 where he also taught Grammar, Logic, Islamic Law and Usul al-Fiqh. He then furthered his studies in the Islamic Seminary in Qum, carrying out traditional Post-Graduate Islamic studies between 1989-93. He also attended private training and research studies with leading scholars of Qum between 1990 and 1994. Alongside these studies, he also taught in Qum across a wide spectrum of the traditional Muslim scholarly disciplines. On his return to the U.K. after founding the Al-Mahdi Institute he continued his graduate (kharij) training in Usul al-Fiqh and Fiqh from 1994 until 2008 under Ayatullah H. Amini, a student of Ayatullah Khoei.

Dr Imranali Panjwani has lived, studied and worked in the UK, Middle East and Australia as an academic, lawyer, chaplain and community worker. He researches Islamic and Western Law focusing on the subject of the law, interpretation of scripture, moral development and access to justice and human rights for minority communities. His country expert reports have been commented upon by judges and lawyers and draw upon his diverse legal, cultural and religious experiences.

What Does the UK Census Tell Us?

Dr Miqdad Asaria walks us through the democraphic changes in the country and what this means for the community.

Dr Miqdad Asaria is a health economist with extensive experience in both academic and policy making settings. His research interests include health inequalities and health financing with a particular focus on the health systems in India and the UK. He currently holds a fellowship from The Health Foundation to investigate the contribution of austerity policies to racial and socioeconomic health inequalities, a grant from the MRC to investigate the impacts of early interventions on inequalities in health and well-being over the life-course, and a grant from the NIHR to develop methods for accounting for unmet needs in healthcare funding formulas. He employs methods from health econometrics, social epidemiology, micro-simulation modelling and cost-effectiveness analysis in his research. Prior to working at LSE, Miqdad has worked with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India, the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York and the Department of Health in the UK. He has also consulted widely for a range of governments and international organisations and serves on advisory groups for government bodies, non-governmental organisations and academic research projects. In addition to his position at LSE, Miqdad also holds an adjunct position as Assistant Professor at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi, India and a visiting position at the University of York, UK.

Reclaiming Rumi: A critical look at the Western portrayal of the life and works of Molana Rumi

Talk by Zena Kazeme.

SPEAKER

Zena Kazeme is a refugee resettlement worker, freelance radio broadcaster and spoken word poet. She sits on the board of Amos Trust, a Palestinian human rights charity. After briefly studying the Masnavi, she co-facilitated a mindfulness workshop for Palestinian war survivors, using the poetry of Molana Rumi to explore and address trauma. She holds a Masters in Law and is a keen refugee rights activist.
