About Us

The Shia Ithna'ashari Community of Middlesex (Mahfil Ali) was established 30 years ago by a group of young professionals seeking to establish a space for communal worship, intellectual discourse, and social engagement. From the outset, our open environment fostered innovative and pioneering ideas to meet the ever changing needs of the community. Providing a free platform for speakers, the participation of all the community across age and gender, establishing the first Sunday Madrasah and open engagement with our neighbours are just a few examples that have subsequently been adopted elsewhere. Having gained planning permission in January 2011, we have an opportunity to make the Salaam Centre a reality, enabling us to continue to grow and innovate, overcoming the challenges of the future in partnership with the wider community.

Aims and Objectives

General Charity
BWF receives numerous donations from a variety of sources every year. In the past financial year the expenditure exceeded £150,000. Locally BWF supports youth groups and education as well as religious and sporting activities. On an international level donations were made to the Pakistan earthquake appeal, Lebanon relief and aid for Iraq, as well as support for a community centre in Switzerland. Money is also regularly donated to assist the relief of poverty worldwide.

Youth
BWF heavily supports local youth groups to recognise the potential of young people and encourage the development of a holistic identity by nurturing their physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual capacities. Many activities are held to help engage with others, develop faith, broaden horizons, and induce positive aspirations within the youth.

Education
On a weekly basis BWF funds an organisation which widens and develops the knowledge of all age groups. Events include tuition classes (for GCSE and A Level subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, French, German and even Latin!), a Sunday school and regular discussions on a wide range of topics.

Health
Health awareness is widely promoted. Recent events such as a health screening and a first aid course have encouraged the public to focus on the betterment of their health. The existing premises also caters for disabled users.

Sports
BWF encourages teamwork and social interaction. Every week numerous activities are held including yoga sessions, football, swimming, gymnastics and running.
